Celtika | Robert Holdstock

Summary: Part fantasy, part alternative history, this novel takes you on a walk with Merlin on his path across Northern Europe. The history and the timelines of recognisable events are fantastically twisted and dislocated, so if you’re a fan of dates and things happening in the correct order, you’ll have to make an effort to hold on to the story. A strange fireside tale which is the perfect way to hide away from day-to-day reality.

And alone in her rented cottage by the sea, she begins to sense an absence in her own life that may not be filled by simply going home.

After You’d Gone | Maggie O’Farrell

Check it out in our online card catalog!

Summary: This is a compulsive read with many mysteries running through it. Did Alice really mean to kill herself? What did she see in Edinburgh that drives her to this? And most importantly where has John, the love of her life, gone? This is an amazingly accurate account of that marvellous feeling when the world shifts, and you know that you are totally in love – and the gut-wrenching grief that descends when that love is no more.

White Teeth | Zadie Smith

Check it out in our online card catalog!

Summary: They say little is good – well, bigger is better. White Teeth has 542 pages and that’s a big book, covering big issues – suicide for starters, plus drugs, fanatical groups (racial and religious), the war, animal experimentation …. Serious stuff, but would you believe the biggest impact the book makes comes from its massive helping of humour throughout. Unputdownable.
