Conclave | Robert Harris

Summary: The Pope has died and the process to appoint a new one is called a conclave. It is a very intense look at the process of selecting a new Pope from the 118 cardinals around the world.

Recommendation: Even though this book and movie is about the Catholic religion, to me it didn’t seem to be religious. It was a look into a very private process of selection a new pope and problems that can arise. The movie follows the book very closely with just a few differences. I enjoyed both of them.

Small Things like These | Claire Keegan

Check it out in our online card catalog!

Summary: This is a historical fictional book set in 1985 Ireland. It is based on the abusive Magdalene Laundry ran in the local convent by nuns. It tells of one local man’s resolve to confront the town people regarding the abusive to women at the laundry.

Recommendation: When I first looked into this movie I didn’t know it was based on a historical fiction book. So of course I had to find out about the Magdalene Laundry in Ireland and all the atrocities it commented in the convent. It’s a short read only 118 pages but very intense and informative.
